How to Visit

We’re more than happy to welcome you in our wonderful Douro Valley. With our handy tips, you will enjoy an unforgettable, comfortable but at the same time adventurous journey.

Arrival

First of all, you need to book your flight to Oporto Airport (OPO) in Northern Portugal. You can get here easily by using a pit stop in Lisbon, Madrid or Frankfurt/Main.

Then we recommend renting a car, which offers the most flexible transport. You can also go by taxi. The taxi-offers vary, but a one-way-trip to the Douro Valley will cost you about 120,- Euros. There’s also a train connection, but it is rather infrequent, and with it you can’t reach every Quinta.

Navigating through the Valley

Our hills are steep, and you will certainly have to drive many serpentines before you can enjoy an ideal view of our vineyards. We therefore advise you to rent a small car.

If you travel in a larger group, please keep in mind to rent a small bus. The streets in the picturesque middle section of the Douro Valley are often narrow and we want you to stay safe while visiting us!

If you go by bus you have to make sure that your trip schedule fits within the framework of legal conditions. A bus driver needs to have a 12-hour break overnight. This is tracked by a device and inspections are very strict. If you want to have shorter breaks, please talk to your bus company in advance.

If you want to come from Porto by train, you can reach Quinta do Vallado (train station Peso da Régua), Quinta do Crasto (Ferrão) and Quinta do Vale Meão (Pocinho). We suggest to take a taxi or to organize a pickup with us as it’s still a little distance from the train stations.

Come and visit us at our Quintas

If you plan to visit our wineries, please keep in mind to schedule a visit. Although most of us offer touristic tours, we don’t all live in the Douro. To prevent you from waiting in front of closed gates, please let us know, when you want to come around.

We also want to make you are aware of the fact that our Quintas are separated by substantial distances:

Quinta do Vallado ⇔ Quinta do Crasto
30km / 45 minutes

Quinta do Crasto ⇔ Quinta do Vale Meão
130km / 2 hours

Quinta do Vale Meão ⇔ Van Zellers and Co.
65km / 1,5 hours

Van Zellers and Co. ⇔ Quinta de Nápoles (Niepoort)
15km / 20 minutes

Quinta de Nápoles (Niepoort) ⇔ Quinta do Vallado
15km / 15 minutes

It’s also very convenient to start from Porto and go straight on the highway to Vila Nova de Foz Côa (2 hours and 15 minutes), if you want to start with a visit at Quinta do Vale Meão or Casa do Rio (Quinta do Vallado).

We suggest staying at least 2 and ½ days to have a relaxed journey and to visit two Quintas per day.

Are you looking for an enlightening wine-discussion paired with a stay in one of the best and most architecturally pleasing hotels in the whole Douro? Then you have to visit the Ferreiras! Their passion for the region is contagious and you will not leave the valley without being impressed by the local cuisine with fruit and vegetables from their own garden.
