Quinta do Vallado
Are you looking for an enlightening wine-discussion paired with a stay in one of the best and most architecturally pleasing hotels in the whole Douro? Then you have to visit the Ferreiras’ wine hotel at Quinta do Vallado! Their passion for the Douro region is contagious and you will not leave the valley without being impressed by the local cuisine with fruit and vegetables straight from their own garden.
In the heart of the Douro wine region, a few kilometers from the center of Peso da Régua, Quinta do Vallado extends on both banks of the Corgo River, a tributary of the Douro River.
The winery’s premise extends on seventy hectares of vineyards as well as another thirty hectares of certified organic vineyards at Quinta do Orgal, in the upper part of the Douro valley, close to Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
Wine making practices at Quinta do Vallado are particularly special as the grapes aren’t moved by pumps, but by gravity. The fermentation and storage happen in stainless steel tanks. In order to guarantee optimal fermentation, the process of cooling and heating the grape mash is controlled by an automatic system.
Now the sixth generation of Ferreiras operates a flourishing business: The two cousins & fellow Douro Boys Francisco and João Ferreira manage the legacy of their legendary ancestor Dona Antónia with great enthusiasm. Quinta do Vallado’s port and table wines are among the most famous in Portugal. The two have clearly inherited the entrepreneurial spirit of their ancestor as well as their deep passion for their home region – the Douro Valley. Quinta do Vallado has become a must-see location under their leadership.
The next generation is already participating in the company’s success: João Roquette, the son of João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro travels the world to promote their excellent wines of Quinta do Vallado.
