Quinta do Vallado

Are you looking for an enlightening wine-discussion paired with a stay in one of the best and most architecturally pleasing hotels in the whole Douro? Then you have to visit the Ferreiras’ wine hotel at Quinta do Vallado! Their passion for the Douro region is contagious and you will not leave the valley without being impressed by the local cuisine with fruit and vegetables straight from their own garden.

In the heart of the Douro wine region, a few kilometers from the center of Peso da Régua, Quinta do Vallado extends on both banks of the Corgo River, a tributary of the Douro River.

The winery’s premise extends on seventy hectares of vineyards as well as another thirty hectares of certified organic vineyards at Quinta do Orgal, in the upper part of the Douro valley, close to Vila Nova de Foz Côa.

Wine making practices at Quinta do Vallado are particularly special as the grapes aren’t moved by pumps, but by gravity. The fermentation and storage happen in stainless steel tanks. In order to guarantee optimal fermentation, the process of cooling and heating the grape mash is controlled by an automatic system.

Now the sixth generation of Ferreiras operates a flourishing business: The two cousins & fellow Douro Boys Francisco and João Ferreira manage the legacy of their legendary ancestor Dona Antónia with great enthusiasm. Quinta do Vallado’s port and table wines are among the most famous in Portugal. The two have clearly inherited the entrepreneurial spirit of their ancestor as well as their deep passion for their home region – the Douro Valley. Quinta do Vallado has become a must-see location under their leadership.

The next generation is already participating in the company’s success: João Roquette, the son of João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro travels the world to promote their excellent wines of Quinta do Vallado.

History

Quinta do Vallado was first mentioned in documents from 1716, making it one of the oldest wineries in the entire Douro Valley. At that time, the vineyards still belonged to Josefa Taveira. In 1818 she sold the property to António Bernardo Ferreira, an uncle and father-in-law of Dona Antónia Adelaida Ferreira. Since then, it has been owned and operated by the Ferreira family.

The legendary Dona Antónia (1811-1896), who was widowed very young, showed great talent and enthusiasm for viticulture. In doing so, she created an entire empire that is still bearing its fruit today. Through her enormous commitment, dynamism, and strength of personality, she became one of the most famous people in Douro history.

The history of Quinta do Vallado can be divided into two epochs: since its foundation and until 1987, mainly port wine was produced. This delicacy was sold by the Ferreira family’s port wine house in Porto under the „Ferreira“ brand. The port wine house was sold in 1987.

The second era began shortly after, when the company focused on the production and marketing of white and red table wines under the „Quinta do Vallado“ brand. At the beginning of this period, the Quinta´s vineyards were restructured.

Quinta do Vallado now cultivates 105 hectares of vineyards, 35 of which are in the Douro Superior. In addition to the new plantings, the modern new cellar was completed in 2009.

Tourism

Throughout the past two decades, Quinta do Vallado opened two hotels in the heart of the Douro.

In 2005 their first wine hotel, the charming “Country Hotel” in the historic main building of Quinta do Vallado opened. In 2012, it was extended with a new wing under the planning of the architect Francisco Vieira de Campos. The extension mainly consists of schist, the most common soil material in the region and is a real eye-catcher.

Then, in 2015 the first guests were welcomed to their second hotel, „Casa do Rio“.

In addition to a wide range of wine activities, where guests can enjoy the range of Quinta Vallado’s great wines, from Rosés, table whites and reds (Perhaps the Tinto!) to their famous ports, one can also make bookings for hiking or cycling tours, boats for fishing trips in the Douro River, as well as picnics and cooking classes.

The winery is international recognized as one of the most successful in the Douro region for its efforts in wine tourism. Make sure to read our travel tips before you visit!
